Linking PAN with Adhaar Card
- More than 17 crore pan cards have yet to be linked to their Aadhaar cards out of 48 crore PAN cardholders in India
In spite of the fact that the income tax department has extended the deadline for linking PAN (Permanent Account Number) card with Aadhaar card eight times in the past, there are still more than 17 Crore PAN cardholders to link the two documents.
The income tax department has the authority to make all such PAN cards, which are not related to Aadhaar, inoperative after amendment in the Finance Bill, 2019.
If one person fails to notify his Aadhaar number then the permanent account number(PAN) assigned to that person shall become inoperative as given by the rules after the notified date, reads Clause 41 of Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act. The amendment came into force on 1 September 2019.
It is obvious that all such inoperative PAN cards will become useless unless they are linked to Aadhaar.
The deadline for linking the 10-digit alphanumeric number provided by the income tax department to the 12-digit UIDAI(Unique Identification Authority of India) identification number has been extended from 31 December 2019 to 31 March 2020. This Extention of connecting PAN card with Adhaar card will provide extra benefit for those PAN holders who are yet to be connected to their PAN card as they will get extra time to connect.
India has more than 48 crore PAN cardholders, while more than 120 crore Indians have Aadhaar card. These two identity cards are now interchangeable for all purposes related to the income tax department, but the link between them is mandatory. If these two are not connected and your using Aadhaar card instead of the PAN, the income tax department may automatically issue you a new PAN card.
This Linking of PAN with Adhaar will help the government from potential tax frauds and money-laundering.
